Billerud Finland Oy, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Billerud AB, has signed an agreement with UPM-Kymmene (UPM) to acquire UPM’s packaging paper business in Pietarsaari and Tervasaari with sales of approximately EUR 220 million (SEK 2 billion) in 2011. Billerud pays EUR 130 million (approximately SEK 1.2 billion) for the business. The acquisition will significantly reduce Billerud’s pulp exposure and strengthen the offering within packaging paper. In addition, the currency exposure is also reduced.

The Board of Billerud AB has decided to proceed with an environmental and energy investment at Skärblacka mill outside Norrköping. The goal is to strengthen the mill for the future by improving environmental performance and energy efficiency as well as enabling future expansion. The investment is expected to amount to SEK 900 million.

Billerud is integrating development work in the field of bioplastics and other future materials. This work has previously taken place in the subsidiary Tenova Bioplastics AB. Billerud acquired Tenova Bioplastics AB in 2009 in order to explore and gain more in-depth knowledge of new possibilities of combining bioplastic with paper in smart packaging. The development division of the company is now being entirely integrated in Billerud.

Billerud has received two awards from IR Nordic Markets, an annual evaluation of the financial communication of Swedish listed companies. Billerud received the award as best Mid Cap company, and Billerud’s Head of Investor Relations Sophie Arnius was cited as best IRO in the Mid Cap category.

The winners of Billerud, NINE’s and Berghs School of Communication SPICE:11 contest based their entry on the words ‘playful’, ‘different’ and ‘smart’ when developing the winning packaging for Orrefors Kosta Boda. Using the four elements of glass blowing as a graphic profile, where earth and fire represent Kosta Boda and wind and water Orrefors, they managed to conceptualise a packaging solution that offered both innovation and functionality.

Chesapeake’s Impressions™, a unique renewable packaging range based on Billerud’s FibreForm®, won Design Challenge 2011 at the largest packaging exhibition in the Nordic countries, Pack & Emballage. The winning packaging concept was selected by the people visiting the exhibition, when asked to vote on their personal favorite.

The NINE innovation and design agency, in which Billerud is the main shareholder, has been awarded Pentaward’s Best of the Show for its work on Ramlösa premium PET. Scanpack, Scandinavia’s biggest packaging fair, is joining forces with Billerud and Santa Maria to launch ‘PackDesign Engineer 2012’ – a pan-Nordic packaging design competition. During transportation packaging is exposed to a range of stresses. Large amounts of foodstuffs and other goods become spoiled every year because of substandard packaging that is unable to withstand the conditions the packaging is exposed to. Billerud works continuously to develop tests, such as CCT10, using realistic environments and durations to simulate the conditions packaging will encounter.

Billerud is to evaluate the technical and market prerequisites for lignocellulose-based pyrolysis products. The project goal is to manufacture green oil from forest residues such as branches, tops and stumps. The green oil can then be turned into renewable energy in customers’ facilities.
